Freedom Cannabis completed installation of rooftop solar system at its facility in Acheson, claiming it is the largest such solar operation in Canada.

A total of 4,574 solar modules installed on the rooftop will produce a maximum capacity of 1,830 kW for the company’s 126,000 square foot facility. It cost $2.6 million, and took about 2-1/2 months to install.

Freedom Cannabis spent $2.6 million to build the entire system, but nearly a million of that came from a provincial rebate program known as Energy Efficiency Alberta, that has since been cancelled by the UCP government. (CTVNews)

“I believe that more companies in the cannabis base have to convert to renewable resources just to compete with the illegal market,”

Maurizio Terrigno, founder of the Canadian Cannabis Chamber of Commerce.

According to Freedom Cannabis, the system will offset about 1,041 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, supplying about eight per cent of the building’s annual power consumption. Based on current demands, the installation is expected to reduce electricity costs by approximately $200,000-$300,000 annually.

Freedom Cannabis is on its way to become the greenest and the most eco-friendly cannabis company in the world. Although it may not be obvious, there’s a direct correlation between energy use and the environment. When consumed less power, less toxic fumes are released by power plants, which conserve the earth’s natural resources and protect ecosystems from destruction. By taking steps to reduce energy intake, Freedom will contribute to a healthier and happier world.
